A woman
learn her estranged father has died and returns with her brother and new lover
to her childhood home of Belize, where she must face her past while fighting
for intimacy in the present…
The
soundtrack is built around three basic musical elements, roughly associated
with the three main characters and their relationships with one another: long
daunting textures, chaotic sparkles, and non-pitched percussion. These three
elements together allow to depict complex feelings: the long textures created
with strings instruments and accordion are somewhat reassuring, but
intimidating at the same time, they cover the frequency spectrum from the very
bottom and have numerous harmonics at the top, as a full and rich base layer.
On top of which, sparsely placed arpeggios of flutes and clarinets give the
sense of chaos, but lighter chaos, a human-sized chaos that sometimes serves as
a way to lighten the mood, sometimes illustrates the looseness in which the
characters may be. The non-pitched percussion come from various previously
sampled sources such as pots and pans, guitar body, or plastic bottles, when
scattered they offer a great sense of awkwardness and allow to navigate within
different levels of tension.
Rafaël Leloup
The music
that Rafaël created for Inheritance is inspired by the story, the raw
performances, and the cinematography in our film—his score is lush, complex,
and full of
mysterious beauty. We wanted to revel in the ambiguity and tension of the film
rather than steer the viewer to an obvious conclusion. The different threads
weave in and out of harmony—reflecting and complicating the story, characters,
and setting. We wanted the music to organically speak to the rich andlayered
culture of Belize. Rafaël intuitively understood where we were coming from on
all these fronts, and we are so pleased that his work will be highlighted here.
We hope you enjoy...
