TENCENT COULD BE HIT WITH $1.5BN FINE AND FORCED TO SELL TWO MUSIC APPS IN CHINA (REPORT)

Image
Tencent and its majority-owned subsidiary, Tencent Music Entertainment (TME), are facing a potential battering in China as part of an antitrust clampdown by the nation’s regulators. Tencent was investigated a couple of years ago by anti-competitive watchdogs in China for striking exclusive licensing agreements with the three major record companies in the territory. Tencent Music’s previous deals with Universal Music, Sony Music and Warner Music, enabled TME – the owner of China’s largest music streaming services – to license the majors’ music for its own platforms, but also to exclusively sub-license these catalogs to local rivals. However, the anti-competition investigation into Tencent was paused after the firm agreed to strike differently-structured music deals. In TME’s latest licensing agreements with Universal and Warner, each announced in the past eight months, Tencent no longer possesses an exclusive sub-licensing right, allowing these companies to also strike separate di...

SPOTIFY IS NOW A MUSIC-MAKING MARKETPLACE, AS IT BUYS NEW YORK-BASED SOUNDBETTER

Image
For a long time, we’ve heard Spotify boss Daniel Ek discuss his ambitions for the service to become a true “two-sided marketplace” for artists. In layman’s terms, this means Spotify wants to provide tools for creators that improve the music they make (and the way they market it), as opposed to just giving fans the means to play their tracks. If Spotify can justifiably charge artists money to use these tools, Ek’s comments lead us to assume, then all the better. Last year, Ek’s aspiration for Spotify to become “two-sided” in this manner made a big step forward when the firm acquired part of Distrokid, and announced it was becoming a digital distributor in its own right. Those plans have since been scrapped. Today (September 12), however, Spotify has confirmed that it’s becoming a very different type of “two-sided” proposition – after buying New York-based SoundBetter, a freelance marketplace which allows creators to book exclusive contributions from producers, songwriters, ma...

Anthem, the specialist arm of sales and finance company IM Global, has added six Asian titles to its Cannes sales lineup. Four are sourced from China’s Enlight Pictures. New Enlight movies include animated adventure “The Guardian” (aka “Da Hu Fa”,) directed by Fan Bu Si. The fantasy quest, aimed at both adults and children, is told using a mix of Chinese ink painting and original hand-drawn animation. Enlight’s documentary “Return to the Wolves,” directed by Yi Feng, recounts the story of a painter, Li Weiyi, who lived in the wild for nine months in order to save an orphaned wolf cub in the grasslands of Sichuan. They join two previously announced Enlight titles: romantic drama “All About Secrets,” directed by Lien Yi-chi and adapted from Rao Xueman’s bestseller of the same title, about a family and friends whose secrets threaten to overwhelm them; and comedy drama “City of Rock,” about a man trying to protect the environment from property developers. Chand K Nova is a multi-instrumentalist from London England. His love for guitar driven music from an early age led to him getting his hands on a guitar and he has rarely put it down since. After teaching himself how to play the songs of the bands he admired growing up, he became bored with just playing and had an urge to create, but was unable to find people to make noise with. This drove chand to learn a variety of instruments and every instrument played on his recordings has been performed by himself. He then turned his attention to creating instrumental music as an outlet for his creativity and firmly believes that every song composed has it's own story.
