A mother arrives at her daughter’s apartment
during a storm to confess a lie that undermines their family’s foundation,
leading to an unravelling relationship between them.
“The
Spiral” centers on a mother-daughter relationship that spirals out of control
following a shocking revelation. During a thunderstorm, Anna (Trinca) shows up
unannounced at the student apartment of her daughter Alice (Vergano) and
reveals “that their entire family history rests on a lie she told
her,”according to the provided synopsis. Anna claims to have made a pact with a
mysterious stranger to save Alice’s leg after an accident 20 years earlier.
That pact “has triggered a domino effect causing terrible events over the
years. Only Alice can help to put everything right. But at what price?,” the
synopsis says.
With
L’Estranea, my first collaboration with Paolo Strippoli, we share the same
desire: to affirm our attachment to genre cinema while trying to push its
boundaries. The music draws on the codes of fantasy and horror to tell
something deeply human: the intimate pains of the characters, but also the
wounds, fears, and tensions that run through our era—the weight of social and
family conventions, madness, psychogenealogy. We wanted music that is at once
physical, unsettling, and emotional, never just highlighting the image. Once
again, it weaves an emotional language between the images, the light, and the
story. For us, genre remains a privileged space for experimentation: a
territory where music can shift reality, bring the invisible to light, and give
a tangible form to what haunts us.
