Mihai and Lisbet Gheorghiu,
a Romanian-Norwegian Pentecostal couple, move with their five children from
Romania to Norway after Mihai's parents die, seeking closeness to Lisbet's
family, who share their faith. Settling in an isolated coastal village, they
form a bond with their neighbors, the Halbergs. When their daughter Elia
appears at school with bruises, suspicions arise about the family's strict
religious upbringing. Fjord explores clashing worldviews, conformity, tolerance
and the boundaries of freedom and intimacy.
"Working with
the music for Fjord was quite a different task than usual. All the music is
diegetic meaning that it is playing in the scenes and the music had to fit the
different characters. Mia, the neighbor and lawyer, is listening to this
spiritual music all the time. The kids have one specific pop song that they
keep returning to. And Frida, the progressive young teacher also has her
soundtrack. So many different directions. And non of it could sound like a film
score.
I had to go back to my time as a songwriter and write songs more than
cinematic cues, and that was a fun revisit to work from there.
Cristian Mungiu started our first meeting by saying; I don’t use music
in my films. But at the end of the day there is a lot of music hidden in the
different scenes. I am very proud to have been a part of such a beautiful but
yet tough story. I hope the music can get a nice life out there on its
own......."
