US broadcast giant iHeartMedia, owner of iHeartRadio, is on the road to recovery following its recent financial troubles. The company has today announced that the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas has confirmed its Plan of Reorganization, out of which iHeart expects to complete its restructuring process in the first half of 2019. Under the terms of the plan, iHeartMedia will complete a balance sheet restructuring which will reduce its debt from $16.1 billion to $5.75 billion and will separate Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings, Inc. from iHeartMedia, creating two independent public companies. Independent artists worldwide are generating serious money for the music industry. According to estimated figures published by MIDiA Research, total revenue generated by ‘self-releasing’ artists in 2018 was $643 million – up 35% on 2017, when the equivalent annual number hit $472m. Today, can reveal that a single distribution company, CD Baby, contributed over $100m of that $600m-plus independent artist revenue. US-based CD Baby, which started as an online CD store in 1998, now represents over 750,000 recording artists, 170,000 songwriters, and over 9m tracks across 800+ genres. Speaking today (January 8), CD Baby CEO Tracy Maddux revealed that his company’s 2018 artist earnings had topped $100m. The average price of a cinema ticket in most markets is higher than a month's subscription to an SVOD service, says Ampere Analysis. Global revenues from subscription streaming video services will overtake the total worldwide box office next year, a study published Monday by Ampere Analysis forecasts. Global subscription revenue is expected to top $46 billion, compared with just under $40 billion in worldwide theatrical revenue, it predicts. Revenue from subscription VOD services in the U.S. already outpaced the domestic box office take in 2017, and the U.K. market is expected to follow suit by the end of this year. China, the world's second-largest theatrical market, will see the SVOD business blow by the box office in 2019, the study finds.
