While visiting her fiance’s mother in southern Italy, a woman must fight the mysterious and malevolent curse intent on claiming her daughter…
“Il Legame” Director statement
The historical and folkloristic researches by Ernesto De Martino, that we can read about in his book “Magic: A theory from the South” lead us through a unique journey into the popular music, which characterizes the culture of Southern Italy. Some of the types of music mentioned in the book are famous in Italy and all over the world. The most famous one is the ‘Taranta’, a type of festivity, where people celebrate the specific ritual of the ‘Fascinazione’ (‘Binding’). In the 60s during this ritual there was a person who was demonically possessed, that used to dance in a contorted and unrestrained way.
Violins, guitars, percussions used to be the most iconic instruments of the ‘Taranta’, which helped to get rid of the evil eye. This is where the creative process with Massimiliano began. With the aim of reproducing those specific feelings and emotions: through choirs similar to the litanies of the south, playing the regional’s instruments, and trying to give the same feeling, the restlessness and the taste of those kind of rituals.‘Il Legame’ Composer statement
The Binding was
shot in Apulia, in the south of Italy, against an inspiring backdrop of olive
trees, canyons, and caves. Mechelli wanted to create evocative sounds that
matched the colours and the landscapes, rather than making a folkloric
soundtrack, he reinvented the way to play region’s typical instruments,
crafting his own personal sound design. “After creating these unique sounds, I
had the idea to make the sound design blend with the orchestra as the movie
approaches the climax, with the aim of gradually leading the audience into a
nightmare,” he says.
